Scoping Made Affordable
(SMA)
Scoping Made Affordable
Training Program

Scoping work remains
steadiest at this time
on Case CATalyst and
Eclipse.
(Jan. 20, 2010)
What court reporters
want the most is a
quality-trained
scopist!!

Wouldn't you like to
work from the comfort
of your home year
round?!
Get started this winter
to be ready for
spring/summer 2010.

A prospective student
who recently listened
to a conference call
was amazed by the amount
of one-on-one guidance that
was provided to the
students of SMA.

Comments from students:
I wanted to let you know that that was a very informative
conference call tonight. I have a much greater
understanding of by-lines and colloquy now.  It really
never made any sense to me before.

A student’s response and question:  Thanks for
sending this as I didn’t even know about some of this.  Is
this something that I need to know or worry about? Or is
this something that I need to know a little bit about it, but
don’t have to worry about using it for now?

My response to the question:  It's important to know
these things because it is all a part of scoping.  That is
why it is important.  We use this terminology and the
various parentheticals on a daily basis in our scoping
work.
How long will it take you??

This scoping training program will take approximately two to three months to learn the
basics, depending upon your work and study schedule.
Once you've gone through the basics and test out, then you will be working on
transcripts and I will be assisting while you begin working with court reporters because
there is so much to learn.  It will probably take a total of
six months to actually
complete this training program.
It is recommended that you keep your current position until you start to have court
reporters sending you work on a regular basis while you gain efficiency in your
scoping technique.

An exit exam will be given to the graduating students so that both the scopist
and court reporters will know that our scopists are prepared to tackle the work
at hand.

Please contact me at sma@joyfulscoping.com for more information.
Or send an email to me and I'll be happy to call you and tell you more.

Due to a difference in
work philosophies,
SearchMaster will
no longer be freely
available to SMA
students.

"And you are a
pleasure to work
with!  Thank you for
your efficient working
habits!"

Due to a difference in work

SMA is providing
training on Eclipse,
Case CATalyst, and
DigitalCAT.
More student feedback:

I am very pleased with what I have been
learning.  I had no idea what all was
involved with contacting reporters, and
dealing with preference sheets, how
much was involved with punctuation,
etc.  I would have not done a very good
job scoping if not for learning what I
have so far.  I am starting to feel more
comfortable, and understanding more
with what it is I need to be doing.

               What Makes Scoping Made Affordable
truly different and the most comprehensive
             scoping training program available?

So you've come back to Scoping Made Affordable and you really want to know
what set SMA's training apart from the various other scoping training programs
available.

Here is a list of how SMA is different:
  • SMA provides a thorough training on working with numbers in the different
formats you will encounter as a scopist.

  • One-on-one training with the SMA instructor with the CAT program you
choose to work with.  SMA does not dictate which CAT program you will
work with.  You do!!  SMA has already spent hours on the phone walking
its students through opening files within their CAT program.  You will
    receive that too!!

  • SMA will walk through transcripts with you and other students looking for
things that need to be changed, corrected, added, and/or deleted.

  • After you've practiced editing transcripts on your CAT program, you will
send the file back to SMA to, once again, receive walk through, step-by-
step corrections and why those corrections need to be made and how they
are important to the court reporter.

  • SMA provides in-depth training on all aspects of punctuation through
    conference calls.

  • SMA always responds to its students the same day and often within the
same hour via email, or if a phone call is necessary, SMA will call you to
work through that issue.  If SMA is not able to address your need, SMA will
let you know when it will address that need.
******************************************************************************************************
SMA believes in strong work ethic and abides by this through both its students
and through the scoping work that Devon personally provides for several
court reporters on a constant basis.

Scoping Made Affordable graduates will know how to:

Catch the tiny details you need caught to give you an excellent final product
without worries about having to "train" your new scopist.

Punctuate and format your documents according to Lillian Morson's
English Guide for Court Reporters.

Format numbers in the various usages needed throughout the transcript.

Contact court reporters regarding any question in their scoping work.

Research for the technical terminology, streets, businesses and other unusual
entities which require unique formatting.

Scope videotaped transcripts with all of the subtleties captured.

Flag items throughout the transcript which need the court reporter's
final okay given to them.

Scoping Made Affordable will stand behind this
commitment to both its graduates and the court
reporters for whom they work for.
One-on-One Training
SMA is the only scoping training program that
provides the necessary one-on-one training that
is needed to become a successful scopist.
SMA has a list of
happy students and
growing list of graduates
who are willing to
share their stories of learning with SMA.
I have been intending to tell you how much I
appreciate your teaching style.  My Pilate's
teacher had the same gift you have of
teaching without making people feel wrong
(even when they are!)  Makes for a very
nice learning environment.
